Access Number - This is the number a users computer dials in order to connect to an ISP (internet service provider) or online service.
ASCII - American Standard Code for Information Interchange - This is a code that computers use to assign a number to each key on the keyboard. There are a total of 128 standard ASCII codes.
Attached File - This is when you embed a file into an email message. For example: If you wish to send your relative a picture of yourself via email, you would attach it to the email message.

Backbone - A digital high-speed line that is used to transmit data very fast and is normally used to transfer a large amount of data.
Bandwidth - The amount of data or information that can be sent in a specific amount of time. This is normally meausured in bits per second (bps).
Beta Software - A program that is given away to many users in order for it to be tested before its final release.
Browser - A program that is used which allows individuals to navigate the internet and display web pages.
Bug - This is when a program contains errors or defects that cause it to crash or malfunction.

Cookies - These are small files that are downloaded from web servers and are stored on the users hard drive. The web server is then able to retrieve the cookie at a later time. For more information on cookies, please visit my page on Security and Privacy

Domain Name - A unique name that is given to an internet site. There are several different types of domain categories such as .com (commercial) .edu (educational) .gov (government) just to name a few.

E-Mail - Electronic Mail - Normally text messages which are sent to another person via a computer.

File Transfer Protocol - FTP - An internet protocol that allows a person to transfer files between two computers.
Freeware - Software that is provided to the public for free, without any registration fees.

Graphic Interchange Format - GIF - A file format that is commonly used for storing images.

Hit - Refers to the amount of times a web page is accessed. Hits are used to determine the popularity of a web site.
Home Page - The front (first) page of a web site.
HTML - Hypertext Markup Language - A coding language that is used to display web pages.
HTTP - Hypertext Transfer Protocol - This protocol is used to transfer hypertext files across the internet.

Internet - The internet is a worldwide network of computers. The internet was first developed by the US Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in 1969 and was called ARPANET. It was originally designed to allow scientists and researchers the ability to share information with each other. The internet is also known as "the net" "cyberspace" "the world wide web" and "the information superhighay.
Internet Explorer - A web browser developed by Microsoft.
Internet Service Provider - ISP - A service that allows individuals to access the internet and usually charges a monthly fee. A few common ISPs are AOL, AT&T, and Earthlink.

Joint Photographic Experts Group - JPEG - A file image format that is commonly used on the web. The JPEG format is preferred for photographic images.

Link - A highlighted word that is normally underlined and when clicked on brings you to either another place within the document or to another separate document altogether. Note: Images can also be links.

Netscape Navigator - A web browser developed by Netscape.
Netiquette - A set of informal rules of behavior for cyberspace.
Netlag - This is what occurs when response time is very slow due to heavy traffic on the internet.

Scroll Bar - This is a bar that appears on the side or bottom that enables a user to scroll up and down or from side to side.
Search Engines - Normally a web site that allows individuals to type in key words to find a web page. For example, if you were looking for antiques for sale on the web, you would type that in the search box and a list of sites containing those key words would be listed.
Shareware - Software that is available for individuals to download and try before you buy.
