WHAT LOVE IS

It starts with a smile or sometimes a glance
That's the beginning of a romance
Continues with a laugh and a small grin
Something really special just might begin.

On the first date you part with a hug and a kiss
Maybe something could become of this
The second time out if it doesn't get yucky
You think to yourself; maybe I got lucky.

You feel a little scared and excited as well
The person you met seems kinda swell
Dreams begin to enter your head
And warm feelings then start to spread.

A person who cares and understands
Causes a glow that begins to expand
A twinkle in the eyes; a blush in the cheeks
You love to listen when that person speaks.

A few more dates and you can see
"I think this person is the right one for me"
Your dreams take off; ideas start to flow
Should you take a chance, how far should you go?

You give of yourself, your secrets reveal
You're falling in love that's how you feel
Give of your heart and of your soul
Passion takes over you lose control.

But you don't seem to mind; you don't seem to care
What you feel for one another is beyond compare
Isn't it great, isn't it grand
Your heart is soaring; you've found your man.

ONE LESS DINOSAUR

The day will come when I'm no longer here
There won't be anyone to cry, not even one little tear
Because I've outlived my usefulness
No reason left for me to exist.

Once there was a time I was big and strong
There were others like me, but they're all gone
No longer walking proud dominating the world
Now hiding in homes with their tails curled.

As always happens a new age comes along
Filled with youth, new ideas, and different songs
No longer able to keep up with the change time brings
Living in developments with names like Saratoga Springs.

We all like to think that our lives were worthwhile
So we can leave this earth with a little smile
But the sad truth is we'll never know
What effect our existence had with the seeds we did sow.

And so the cycle of life continues on
Please don't mourn me after I'm gone
I've had my life, both the good and the bad
Leaving this plane of existence isn't so sad.

Ready for the next adventure that comes after death
If I get the chance, I'll leave you with a smile, when I take my last breath
Be at peace knowing I've won the race
I'm traveling on, to a much better place.

COMA: AT DEATH'S DOOR

Each day is the same
No different from the last
I spend my days dreaming
Of my life long since past.

Lying here in my hospital bed
In my eyes a vacant stare
Preparing to go on a journey
To another place somewhere.

I hear sounds all around me
That I've heard other times before
Clinking of plates and metal instruments
These sounds come through my door.

Then there's the crying and complaining
That life just isn't fair
But there's no way for me to tell them
Not to worry, we're all in G-d's good care.

Every once in a while
An angel comes to me
Whispering, "Don't worry
You'll soon be set free."

"You'll see wonders that will astound
Miracles that take place
You'll come to understand
The true meaning of the human race."

Suddenly I feel as if
A great weight is taken off me
I begin to float, passing through ceilings
My feeling's peaceful as my soul's now free.

Guided by the light
Shinning brightly from above
I seem to recognize other spirits
As they greet me with their love.

LIFE'S EXPECTATIONS

Life is funny or so it seems
Often imitating a bad night's dream
Then there's the times when life is so good
What's it all about? I wish I understood!

We're born to this world not knowing where we belong
Many of us find our way and yet others get it all wrong
For the ones that find happiness, contentment, and peace
They go through life happy dreading the day their time will cease.

It's not the lucky people that find happiness most days
That I will concern myself with, while writing my poetic phrase
Others like me, who are often sad and blue
Are the people I will write about, telling tales that are frequent and true.

Many of us have tales of woe
Telling of dreams crushed and gone, long ago
Some were of success, money, and fame
Others of broken hearts, it's all quite the same.

We lived, laughed, loved, and lost
Whether it was money, friendship, or love, it hurts just the same, of course
Lovers quarrel, feelings exposed and damaged, gone is the rapport
Sometimes less but often more, we shed our tears for what wasn't in store.

Having great expectations about life when young
The world was ours to explore, study, frolic in and have fun
But somewhere along the way
We lost the freedom that comes with happiness and play.

Living life we try to do our part
Helping others to be happy while attempting to be smart
Believing that this is the way
That G-d intended we live each day.

Some of us find our way back home
Where happiness, love, and contentment become our own
For the others, like me, who still live through woe
We can at least take comfort knowing it won't be so terrible when it's our time to go.

More About Greg

Greg's Picture

I’m a fifty-six year old man who was born and raised in New Jersey, USA. My life has been one of extremes, as is my personality. For example, I grew up in a very comfortable, upper middle class neighborhood where many high school graduates went on to Ivy League colleges. While I attended a junior college in Florida, not because my family didn’t have the money, I didn’t have the grades. Then to cause my life to become even more different than the world I had been born into, I was drafted out of college into the U.S. Army and spent over a year in Vietnam from 1969-1970. While in high school I fell in love with a girl that I’ve loved my entire life but because I thought she deserved a better life than I’d be able to provide, I walked away from that love, only to learn as time went on, that for me, true love only comes once. Not wanting to live my life alone, I married in spite of knowing that my true love was the girl I had left behind. My wife had a son from a previous marriage that was just two when I met her. We married and raised that child along with another son that we had together. Both my sons graduated college, cum laude. My stepson is an architect and my younger son is working in television production. My wife and I divorced last year after twenty-four years of marriage; however, we still speak and are on friendly terms. I began writing poetry two years ago as a way of venting deep emotions and have found it not only to be a wonderful therapy but fun as well. I’ve also made many good friends through this and other poetry websites. I sincerely hope you enjoy my poetry and thank Cindy for the honor she has bestowed upon me.

Greg passed away on March 24, 2006. He was a wonderful poet as well as a friend to many.
Rest in peace, my friend and know that you will be missed and are loved by many.
